Delhi To Mumbai Bike Transport Basics: Distance, Time, And Why It Varies

Most corporate transfers and bank postings between the capital and Mumbai end up on this corridor, and it is also the one where carriers run most often. That volume is the reason a 1,400 km haul costs less than people expect.

The road distance is about 1,415 km and the usual transit is 4–6 days from the day the carrier leaves Delhi. Add a day at either end for pickup and for the delivery appointment, and you have the real timeline. The route normally follows NH48 through Gurugram, Jaipur, Udaipur, Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat, with parts of the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway cutting time off the Rajasthan stretch.

Why the timing changes

The slow part is the last 60 km, not the first 1,300. Heavy vehicles are usually allowed into Mumbai only in limited hours, so a truck that reaches the Gujarat border on time can still sit outside the city till night.

Besides that, four things move the date more than anything else:

  • How often carriers leave for Mumbai. A bike booked on a day when a vehicle is already loading leaves sooner than one that waits for a full load.
  • Season. June to September is the slow season for ghat and coastal sections. Winter is generally smooth, apart from morning fog out of Delhi.
  • Where you are in the NCR. Pickup from Delhi proper is quickest. If you are in Gurgaon, Noida or Faridabad, mention your sector when you ask for the quote.
  • Who receives it. A delivery that needs an RWA letter or gate pass takes longer than one where the driver can park outside and hand over.

How to Ship my Bike! - 3 Ways To Transport Your Bike From Delhi To Mumbai

There are really only three options. Here is how each one works out on this route.

1. Door-to-door by covered carrier

A trained crew wraps the bike, straps it to a frame inside a covered vehicle, and the same company takes it to your Mumbai address. For most people this is the sensible choice: about ₹5,500 to ₹7,550 for a commuter bike, 4–6 days on the road, and nothing for you to arrange apart from being there at both ends. Read more on our door-to-door bike transport page.

2. Railway parcel

Possible, but slow. The bike goes by parcel train from a Delhi station, and you collect it at Mumbai. Packing is on you, the tank must be nearly empty, and transit depends on which trains run that week, so it can take longer than a carrier. If the parcel office at Mumbai cannot take two-wheelers, you are stuck, so ask first. See our train vs truck comparison.

3. Ride it yourself

1,415 km is 4 days of riding at a comfortable pace, and 3 nights on the road. Fuel is around ₹3,000 for a commuter bike (about ₹4,500 for a 350cc Royal Enfield). Toll is free for bikes, but hotels, food and a return ticket are not. It works if you want the trip. It does not work if you are in a hurry or the bike is new and still running in.

Delhi To Mumbai Bike Transport Costs: What You’re Really Paying For

Here are the numbers for a bike going from Delhi to Mumbai. They include standard packing, loading, GST and door pickup and delivery. Insurance is optional and comes on top.

Where the money goes (commuter bike, mid-range quote of ₹6,500)

ItemApprox. amount
Line-haul freight (Delhi to Mumbai)₹4,100
Loading, strapping and standard wrap₹650
Door pickup and door delivery₹750
GST at 18%₹1,000
Total₹6,500

What can change the final figure

  • Transit insurance: optional cover at 2.5% of what you declare, never below ₹300. Declare ₹60,000 and it comes to about ₹1,500 plus GST.
  • Express delivery: costs roughly a quarter more on the transport charge and cuts the trip to 2–4 days.
  • Depot instead of door: if you can bring the bike to a hub or collect it from one, the ₹750 door charge and its GST drop off.
  • Difficult access: if the truck cannot reach your gate, a smaller vehicle for the last stretch may cost extra. Tell us the address up front.
  • Waiting time: if the driver is kept waiting at pickup or delivery for hours, waiting charges can apply. Ask the policy before you book.

The price rises with distance, but not in a straight line. The first few hundred kilometres cost more per km than the rest, because loading, packing and paperwork are fixed. The Safety Checklist Before You Pay Any Advance for Bike Shipping from Delhi

Most complaints about bike shipping start with a rushed advance payment. Before you send money, run through this list.

  • Get the quote in writing. It should name the pickup address, the Mumbai delivery address, packing, insurance, GST and the days promised.
  • Ask if the bike stays on one vehicle. Over 1,415 km, a transfer at a hub is where most damage and delay happen.
  • Check the company is real. Ask for the GST number, the registered office address and a landline or office you can visit or video call. Search the name with reviews.
  • Pay a company account. Get a receipt or invoice. Payments to personal numbers with no bill are hard to dispute later.
  • Look at the insurance papers. Find out what is covered (theft, accident, loading damage), what you pay first, and whom to call if something goes wrong.
  • Prepare the bike. Keep fuel to about a litre, tape or disconnect the battery lead, remove loose accessories and keep one key with you. Our how to prepare your bike guide covers the rest.
  • Ask for a contact number for the trip. Someone should pick up the phone while your bike is on the road.
  • Plan the Mumbai delivery. Many Mumbai housing societies have gates and lanes a full-size carrier cannot enter, so the bike is often moved to a smaller tempo for the last stretch.

Documents You Usually Need for Bike Transport from Delhi to Mumbai (And When NOC Matters)

Crew at pickup will ask for a short set of documents. Registration in Maharashtra is a separate job that you do after the bike arrives.

  • RC (registration certificate): a copy goes with the bike, and the original stays with you.
  • Authorisation letter: if someone other than the owner hands over or receives the bike, with their ID.
  • Loan papers: if the RC shows hypothecation, carry the lender's consent letter for the move.
  • Contact details: a phone number and landmark for both Delhi and Mumbai.
  • Owner's ID: any one of Aadhaar, driving licence or passport, with the same name as the RC.
  • Insurance copy: the current policy, not an expired one. Third-party cover is the minimum.

When NOC matters

Moving a bike to another state does not need an NOC for the transport itself. It matters when you want to re-register the bike in Maharashtra. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, a registration from another state stays valid for twelve months, and after that you must apply for a new registration number. The Delhi transport office issues the NOC for that, and if the bike is financed, the lender has to clear it first.

In Mumbai the registering office depends on your address: MH-01 Tardeo, MH-02 Andheri, MH-03 Wadala and MH-47 Borivali are the usual ones.

One more point. If you qualify for the BH (Bharat) series, you do not need to re-register when you move states. Also check the current rules on older vehicles in Delhi–NCR with the transport department, because they have changed more than once. Step-By-Step Booking Process of Bike Transport from Delhi to Mumbai: Pickup To Delivery

Most bookings follow these seven steps. Our how it works page has more detail.

  1. Send your details. The form above takes a minute. We need the bike model, whether it starts, and the two addresses: one in Dwarka or elsewhere in Delhi NCR, one in Mumbai.
  2. Read the quote. For 1,415 km it should show the total with GST, about 4–6 days on the road, and what is included. A commuter bike on this route starts near ₹5,500.
  3. Prepare the bike. Drain the tank to about a litre, remove accessories and clean it so scratches show up in the photos.
  4. Handover in Mayur Vihar or nearby. The crew walks around the bike with you, notes every mark, ties it down and hands you the condition sheet.
  5. Transit to Mumbai. Expect about 4–6 days on the road. You get the driver or coordinator number for updates.
  6. Delivery slot. The driver calls before arrival. Share the exact address, gate and a person who can sign.
  7. Check, sign and pay the balance. Compare the bike against your pickup photos before signing. Write any scratch on the delivery sheet at the time.

In Mumbai we usually deliver to Andheri, Powai, Goregaon, Borivali, Bandra, Dadar and Chembur. Many Mumbai housing societies have gates and lanes a full-size carrier cannot enter, so the bike is often moved to a smaller tempo for the last stretch.

Mistakes People Make On This Bike Shipping Route (And How You Avoid Them)

  • Forgetting the second key. Hand over only one, and keep the other with you.
  • Ignoring the weather. June to September is the slow season for ghat and coastal sections. Winter is generally smooth, apart from morning fog out of Delhi. Ask for a flexible window.
  • Booking too late. Last-minute bookings get whatever vehicle is free, often at a higher rate. Book three to five days ahead on this route.
  • A mistake specific to Mumbai. Not telling the society office about a night delivery. The carrier arrives at 1 am, the guard refuses entry, and waiting charges start running. Send the driver's number to the secretary a day before.
  • Not planning the drop. Typical delivery areas include Andheri, Powai, Goregaon, Borivali, Bandra, Dadar and Chembur. Many Mumbai housing societies have gates and lanes a full-size carrier cannot enter, so the bike is often moved to a smaller tempo for the last stretch.
